SCHULENBURG FESTIVAL GOLF CLASSIC

The 8th Annual Schulenburg Festival Golf Classic will be held on Friday, August 1st at the Weimar Golf Course with a tee time of 8:00 a.m..

The format will once again be a 4-person scramble, and will follow the new system of forming teams that we implemented last year. Players will be able to form their own team, regardless of each players handicap. At the completion of play, teams will then be “flighted”.

“There were a number of factors that led to making this change,” says tournament director Mike Olle.

“#1, the Festival tournament has always been about golfers getting to play with friends, former classmates, etc.”

“#2, pairing up teams evenly (A, B, C, D golfers) is extremely difficult” Olle added. “Unfortunately on a couple of occasions, we’ve had golfers come in that we didn’t know, took their word on their handicaps, then had them blow away the field.”

“#3, inevitably when you think you have the teams drawn evenly, one or two don’t show up that morning, then you’re scrambling, trying to fill in the holes and still keep it even” Olle said.

“The tournament has never been about someone having a chance to win a huge cash prize,” said Olle. “It’s been about having FUN, playing with friends, and raising money for worthwhile causes. So if you’re in it to win big money, this tournament is not for you.”

The tournament is limited to 72 players or 18 4-person teams. This way, play moves along at a better pace.

So for those golfers who didn’t play last year, here’s how it works. Let’s say we have 18 teams. All teams will play their 18 holes and bring their scorecards into the clubhouse to be “flighted”. The very best score of the day (lowest score) will be the #1 team. The second best score will be the #2 team and so forth, until we have teams from #1 through #18.

There will be three flights with six teams in each flight. So the #1 team will win the 1st Flight and the #2 team will be 2nd in that flight. The #7 team will win the 2nd Flight with the #8 team placing 2nd. Then the #13 team will win the 3rd Flight and the #14 team will take 2nd in the last flight. Any ties will be broken by a scorecard playoff from hole #18 back.

The “luck of the draw” definitely comes into play. The #12 team will then wish they played a little worse somewhere along the way.

“This way, friends can team up and know they’ll play together regardless of what their handicaps are,” Olle said. “If four “A” golfers want to play together, fine. They’ll be shooting for the very best score of the day. But an ‘average’ team can just play the best they can and hope they fall into one of the ‘winning’ slots.”

The “Bohemian Open” held in Flatonia each year has been very successful using this scramble format.

If you do not have a 4-person team, we’ll take your name and put you on a team that may also be looking for players. “I would advise everyone to sign up as soon as possible as the first 72 golfers who sign up will be entered,” Olle said.

The entry fee will once again be $50.00 per player which includes one mulligan, which also gets you another entry for door prize drawings.

Cart rentals are handled directly through the Weimar Golf Course. Players who have carts are “strongly encouraged” to bring them to Weimar as rental carts can sometimes run short.

Cash and prizes will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd Place teams in each of the three flights. There will also be prizes for Longest Drive, Most Accurate Drive, Closest to the Pin and Longest Putt Made. There will also be an optional Skins Game.

There will be pigs, kolaches and donuts served in the morning and hamburgers, courtesy of Smith Dairy Queens served for lunch, along with liquid refreshments as long as they last.

“The Festival Golf Classic has raised over $28,000 in our first seven tournaments, thanks in large part to the tremendous support of area businesses who sponsor tee boxes, greens, and donate some wonderful door prizes,” Olle added. “As with all Festival monies raised, proceeds go toward scholarships, charitable causes and civic projects in the community.”
